About Dr. Erik Clary

Dr. Erik Clary is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) with 30+ years of clinical experience in small animal general and orthopedic surgery. He holds the DVM degree from Kansas State University and trained in small animal surgery first at the University of Georgia and then North Carolina State University. Post-residency, Dr. Clary was recruited to Duke University Medical Center where he served for many years as a researcher working chiefly in the field of minimally-invasive surgery. Concurrent with the work at Duke, he founded a mobile veterinary surgical referral practice that operated in Raleigh-Durham, NC, for over 20 years. Prior to joining TVSS, Dr. Clary served 5 years on faculty at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine, teaching small animal surgery (general and orthopedic) to veterinary students and serving in OkSU’s Boren Veterinary Teaching Hospital. With the latter, his surgical expertise and compassionate care for pets and pet owners were twice recognized on the national stage with intense media coverage of two patients (“Milo” and “Siggi”) that also earned for him and his colleagues at OkSU high honors within the ACVS in 2019.

Dr. Clary is also a PhD-trained ethicist and devotes significant time to work in the field of bioethics. He is married (Ashlyn) and has one child who is presently studying veterinary medicine at the University of Georgia. The family presently has two cats and two dogs - all rescues. Outside of veterinary medicine, Erik has long been active in church life and he considers music (piano, guitar) as his main hobbies.

On his service with TVSS that began in summer, 2022, Dr. Clary says “I am very pleased to work with Dr. Nunley and the team he has assembled at TVSS to carry out the mission of making specialty surgery more accessible to pets and pet owners in partnership with progressive general practice colleagues.”
